Aviation
played an important part in fighting the fires during the forest fire
crisis in BC during the summer of 2003. The BC Air Tanker service flew
an unprecedented number of missions dropping retardant on the hundreds
of fires throughout the province. Aircraft from other provinces, such
as the CL 415s from Quebec and Ontario, were joined by helicopters with
their bucketing operations in dousing the fires. The Canadian Forces
deployed a force of CH-146 Griffon tactical helicopters in support of
the effort. The Griffons flew firefighters to the fire zones, conducted
information gathering and liaison flights and were available for the
air evacuation of casualties.
