Military
history in the Okanagan:
The Okanagan Military Museum is located in the Memorial Arena building
in Kelowna at 1424 Ellis Street. The museum
society is dedicated to the preservation of our military and naval
history, often within a local perspective, as a valuable contribution
to our community. Thousands of Okanagan residents have served in our
country's armed services and hundreds continue to serve in our Regular
or Reserve forces or have relatives in in these categories. In addition,
our youth continue to have a connection to our military history either
actively through participation in the Cadet movement or during Remembrance
Day activities and as part of their educational development as well
informed future citizens.
Museum
collection: The museum has a significant collection of military
artifacts such as a fine collection of military small arms, uniforms,
insignia, badges and equipment.
Special
exhibits and events:
The museum has an ongoing program of special exhibits designed to highlight
various aspects of our military history. For example, a special exhibit
illustrating the role of the Canadian Forces in fighting the forest
fires of 2003 will be launched this fall. The museum is also a venue
for special events such as book launches and speakers presentations.
