Quilting Service Information

Quilting Styles

Meandering ~ refers to a freehand continuous line of stitching that resembles puzzle pieces. It covers the entire quilt providing texture, however, the quilt design remains the main feature. It is the most economical style of quilting at $2.00/sq. ft.

Freehand Meandering ~ refers to a freehand continuous line with designs such as leaves, hearts, stars, loops and flowers. Depending on the style the price ranges from $2.00 - $3.00/sq.ft.

Pantograph Patterns ~ refers to an “all-over” or “edge-to-edge” repeated pattern regardless of the quilt top design. There are a large variety of patterns to chose from. Prices range from $2.50 to $3.00/sq.ft.

To calculate your quilt size into sq. ft:

Length x Width divided by 144
e.g. 90”x 108”= 9720”/144 = 67.5 sq.ft.

Binding Service

I will make your binding, sew it to your quilt top and hand sew it to the back of your quilt. The charge for this service is 15 cents per inch.

Threads

Finishing Stitches has a variety of threads for you to choose which is included in the price of machine quilting. There is a thread charge for variegated threads, rayons, nylons & metallics. (Rayons & metallics will only be used on small wallhangings.) The thread charge is usually $5-$10.

Backing

Choose 100% cotton backing fabric. Poly/cotton & 100% polyesters stretch differently than cotton and can cause tucks & puckering during the quilting process. Use of sheets is strongly discouraged as most cause poor tension and constant thread breakage.

Batting

You are welcome to bring your own batting. For your convenience, I will keep the following high quality battings in stock:

  • Hobb’s Heirloom Premium Cotton – 80% Cotton/20% Polyester. This can be quilted from ¼” to 3 1/2 “ apart and will shrink up to 5% to give that old-fashioned antique look, unless pre-shrunk.
  • Hobb’s Heirloom Organic Cotton with scrim – 100% Cotton/Chemical Free – can be quilted up to 10” apart. Great for people with allergies.

Quilting Preparation

  • backing & batting should be at least
6” wider and longer than your quilt]
  • quilt tops should have all loose threads cut from front & back
  • ensure your quilt is square. If not or borders are wavy or puckered, you may have puckers/tucks after it is quilted
  • press your quilt top well, making sure seams are pressed flat on the back
  • remove all selvage edges on backing. Do not serge seams. Press seams open.
bring quilt top, backing and batting separately folded
  • if your quilt has no borders, stay stitch ¼ inch from the edge all around the quilt top to prevent the seams from opening when it is stretched on the machine
  • quilt preparation can be done at Finishing Stitches. Depending on work required, charges start at $10.00
  • For your convenience Hobbs Batting can be purchased at Finishing Stitches.
